About the artist

George Vernon Meredith Frampton (1894–1984), a distinguished painter and etcher, was born in London. He was the offspring of Sir George Frampton, the creator behind the iconic Peter Pan sculpture, and Christabel Cockerell, a well known artist. The path of his artistic journey began in Westminster School, further enriched by private art lessons, and was solidified through a stint in Geneva where he learned French.

Frampton later enrolled at St John’s Wood Art School. Between 1912-15, and during several evenings in subsequent years, he refined his craft at the prestigious Royal Academy Schools. His exceptional talent was recognised when he won a first prise and a silver medal. His career as an artist was put on hold due to his service in the World War I Army.

Already a member of the Art Workers’ Guild, Frampton debuted his work at the Royal Academy (RA) from 1920-45. He ascended to the rank of a Royal Academician in 1942, only to retire in 1953. Towards the end of World War II, he discovered that his eyesight was deteriorating, which posed a significant challenge to his detailed-oriented artwork.
