About this artwork

"Grammar of Ornament" by Owen Jones, a British designer from the 19th century, is a piece of art that is still in awe for its beautiful presentation. Launched in 1856, the book boasts 112 wonderfully illustrated plates showcasing various design elements such as patterns, motifs, and ornaments. The book takes you on a journey through 19 different cultural eras, exploring the architecture, textiles, manuscripts, and decorative arts of each period. The final chapter of the book is a tribute to the beauty of the natural world."Grammar of Ornament" was a grand publishing venture that set a new standard in colour printing. Despite the rapid advancement of industrial technology during the Victorian era, the printing presses back then were simply not equipped to mass-produce the intricate details of Jones' plates. Jones took upon himself to fund the print run of "Grammar" out of his own pocket, which was quite a costly undertaking. He collaborated with lithographers Day & Son and employed the then-new and very costly technique of chromolithography. This complex printing process involved up to 20 different lithographic stones and drawings, each representing a different colour. These were then printed one on top of the other, layer by layer, to create the final plate. For "Grammar of Ornament," Jones' assistants painstakingly replicated the original drawings onto lithography stones for a year. The book is still in print after a century and a half, reflecting its timeless appeal in design.Owen Jones was trained as an architect, designer, and design theorist and is recognised as one of the key influencers of the Victorian era.

About the artist

Owen Jones, who lived from 1809 to 1874, was a multifaceted architect and designer, and was considered a leading design theorist of the 19th century. His significant contributions had a profound impact on modern aesthetics during the time. Known for his extensive travels, Jones drew a great deal from the Islamic world for his innovative theories on design and colour.

He was among the pioneering architects who studied the Alhambra and was deeply fascinated by its vibrant hues and complex geometrical designs. This profound experience led him to dedicate subsequent years to the development of chromolithography, a chemical printing method that enabled the creation of multicoloured prints, a feat unmatched by existing printing techniques of the time.

This trip to the Alhambra sparked Jones' deep appreciation of colour and his advocacy for its use in all facets of contemporary design. Amidst a 19th-century Britain heavily influenced by historical revivals, Jones sought to forge a distinctive modern style. His design guide, "The Grammar of Ornament," published in 1856, encapsulates his theories and features the finest examples of ornamentation and decoration from various cultures and eras.
