About this artwork

The original artwork for 'Plate VI: Egyptian N.3' comes straight out of Owen Jones' (1809-74) design masterpiece, 'The Grammar of Ornament', published in London 1856. The 'Grammar of Ornament' was a groundbreaking work by Jones, unveiling in 1856. This spectacular, large-format book featured 112 beautifully illustrated plates, each showcasing a variety of striking patterns, motifs, and decorative elements. The detailed illustrations dove into the design theories behind architecture, textiles, manuscripts, and decorative arts from a total of 19 distinctive cultural eras, while saving the best for last with a final chapter dedicated to the splendors of the natural world.'The Grammar of Ornament' was an impressive publishing venture that set new standards for colour printing. Despite the rise of industrial technology in the Victorian era, the printing presses of the time simply couldn't recreate the level of detail found in Jones' plates at a mass scale. As a result, Jones had to fund the printing of the 'Grammar' from his own pocket, incurring significant costs. He collaborated with Day & Son, a lithography company, and opted for the costly but advanced process of chromolithography. This complex printing method needed up to 20 individual lithographic stones and drawings for each colour — each layer printed over the previous one to finally yield the completed plate. For 'Grammar of Ornament', assistants to Jones spent a whole year carefully reproducing the original artworks onto lithography stones. The book is still being printed over 150 years since its inception, a testament to its lasting design allure.Owen Jones was a man of many talents; he was trained as an architect, a designer, and a design theorist, and had a significant influence as a tastemaker during the Victorian era.

About the artist

Owen Jones, who lived from 1809 to 1874, was a multifaceted architect and designer, and was considered a leading design theorist of the 19th century. His significant contributions had a profound impact on modern aesthetics during the time. Known for his extensive travels, Jones drew a great deal from the Islamic world for his innovative theories on design and colour.

He was among the pioneering architects who studied the Alhambra and was deeply fascinated by its vibrant hues and complex geometrical designs. This profound experience led him to dedicate subsequent years to the development of chromolithography, a chemical printing method that enabled the creation of multicoloured prints, a feat unmatched by existing printing techniques of the time.

This trip to the Alhambra sparked Jones' deep appreciation of colour and his advocacy for its use in all facets of contemporary design. Amidst a 19th-century Britain heavily influenced by historical revivals, Jones sought to forge a distinctive modern style. His design guide, "The Grammar of Ornament," published in 1856, encapsulates his theories and features the finest examples of ornamentation and decoration from various cultures and eras.
