About this artwork

Femme a la guitare' was initially created by Picasso using a method known as lino cut. During his distinguished career, Picasso made a number of lino prints, an art technique where artists etch into a block of linoleum to form a raised image. This image is subsequently inked and printed. In 1959, he came up with the one-block technique. This inventive approach allowed him to create boldly textured works on paper, such as this print in the cubist style of a woman strumming a guitar.

About the artist

Pablo Picasso , born 25 October 1881 and died 8 April 1973, was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. His work is often categorised into periods, with the Blue Period (1901-1904) and the Rose Period (1904-1906) being the most famous. Picasso's personal life was often tumultuous, with multiple marriages and affairs, and he had four children from three different women. He was also a political activist and a prolific artist, producing over 20,000 works of art in his lifetime.
