About the artist

The late British artist Patrick Heron (1920-1999) was not only a phenomenal painter but also a talented writer and designer. Heavily inspired by the works of Braque, Matisse, and Bonnard, Heron's initial artwork was largely shaped by their influences. He made remarkable strides in propagating the modernist perspectives of painting, both through his critically acclaimed writings and his artistic creations.

In 1956, Heron made a switch to abstract art and established residence in Cornwall, joining the esteemed St Ives School. His abstract works showcased incredible diversity, from vertical and horizontal stripe paintings to more fluid formats featuring fuzzy-edged shapes. Regardless of the style, one constant remained - the pulsating brilliance of colour that made his work stand out.

Heron also authored several books, including 'The Changing Forms of Art' (1955), 'The Shape of Colour' (1973), as well as in-depth analyses of Vlaminck (1947), Hitchens (1955), and Braque (1958).
