About this artwork

Back in 1914, Paul Klee embarked on a fortnight-long exploration trip to Tunisia, located in North Africa. This lively terrain enhanced Klee's comprehension of colour, leading him to declare his famous line, 'Colour and I are one. I am a painter'. As a result, Klee's creations in the years to follow veered more towards abstraction than his former artworks, with an intense focus on colour. 'Castle and the sun' is a testament to Klee’s transition in artwork, showcasing a cityscape made up of a dazzling array of shapes set against an intense copper backdrop.

About the artist

Paul Klee (1879-1940) was a Swiss-born German artist who is best known for his unique style of abstract art. He was a member of the Blaue Reiter group of expressionist artists and was heavily influenced by cubism, surrealism and orientalism. He was also a professor at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture. Klee was a prolific artist, producing over 9,000 works in his lifetime. He was also a talented musician and poet.
