About this artwork

'Park Near Lu', a painting by Paul Klee in 1938, is his artistic take on the vegetation he saw at a park in Lucerne, Switzerland. Klee's spouse, Lily, would frequently travel to Lucerne in the late 1930s due to health concerns. During her visits, they often spent time meandering through the park. His unique use of vibrant reds and yellows counterposed by the black lines illustrating the park's flora, along with the cool blues and greens used for the geometric shapes in the background, create an intriguing contrast. The blend of these contrasting colours is Klee's way of expressing the park's changing aspect in both the summer and winter seasons.

About the artist

Paul Klee (1879-1940) was a Swiss-born German artist who is best known for his unique style of abstract art. He was a member of the Blaue Reiter group of expressionist artists and was heavily influenced by cubism, surrealism and orientalism. He was also a professor at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture. Klee was a prolific artist, producing over 9,000 works in his lifetime. He was also a talented musician and poet.
