About this artwork

Paul Nash is well-known for his haunting depictions of the Western Front, with his barren landscapes remaining some of the most recognised images. His piece, 'A Howitzer Firing,' completed in 1918 for the Ministry of Information, is a striking example. It shows four British artillerymen operating a Howitzer gun under a cover of camouflage netting. To the right, the gun's muzzle is shown emitting a brilliant burst of light. This print is carefully color balanced to match the original and has received approval from the Imperial War Museum. Each purchase contributes to the museum's ongoing work.

About the artist

Born in 1889 and passing away in 1946, Paul Nash significantly impacted the modernist art scene as a painter, illustrator, and designer. Influential in bringing European avant-garde styles, like Surrealism and Abstraction, to Britain's art world, Nash carved out a unique position for himself.

His deep fondness for the English countryside coupled with an innovative approach to European modernism set his work apart from his British contemporaries. He is most recognised for his emotive landscapes and striking World War II scenes.

His artistic journey began at the Slade School, and it was interrupted when he was injured while serving in the First World War. During his recovery, Nash became an Official War Artist, creating impactful depictions of No Man's Land's desolate landscape. These pieces remain indelible reminders of the war's devastation.

Nash considered himself a successor to the traditions of luminaries such as William Blake and Turner. His work resonates with the ancient history and myths of the English landscape, infusing it with a magical, surreal quality. His artwork, therefore, paints a rich tapestry of the English backdrop.
