About this artwork

Paul Nash, a well known British artist, chose to paint a familiar scene in 1918, drawing from his firsthand experience serving in the Ypres Salient as part of the Hampshire Regiment from 1916-1917. Ypres, a town located in West Belgium, was the epicenter of three massive battles during World War I. Nash effectively captured the town's importance in his depiction of three soldiers situated on the fire step of a trench, fascinated by a star shell illuminating the battlefield below. This print has been color authenticated to match the original and comes with the approval of the Imperial War Museum. When you make a purchase, you're also supporting the museum's ongoing work.

About the artist

Born in 1889 and passing away in 1946, Paul Nash significantly impacted the modernist art scene as a painter, illustrator, and designer. Influential in bringing European avant-garde styles, like Surrealism and Abstraction, to Britain's art world, Nash carved out a unique position for himself.

His deep fondness for the English countryside coupled with an innovative approach to European modernism set his work apart from his British contemporaries. He is most recognised for his emotive landscapes and striking World War II scenes.

His artistic journey began at the Slade School, and it was interrupted when he was injured while serving in the First World War. During his recovery, Nash became an Official War Artist, creating impactful depictions of No Man's Land's desolate landscape. These pieces remain indelible reminders of the war's devastation.

Nash considered himself a successor to the traditions of luminaries such as William Blake and Turner. His work resonates with the ancient history and myths of the English landscape, infusing it with a magical, surreal quality. His artwork, therefore, paints a rich tapestry of the English backdrop.
