About this artwork

Piet Mondrian created the artwork 'Blossoming Apple Tree' in 1912. This was a period when he was just getting his feet wet with Cubism, but his inspiration continued to be sourced from nature. He kept the colour palette of the tree minimal using only a few shades of green, grey, and ochre, so as to keep the emphasis on the shape of the tree. He used a selection of delicate oval forms to compose the tree, a style that became prevalent in Mondrian's pieces for the next three years.

About the artist

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch painter and theoretician who is best known for his pioneering work in abstract art. He was a major contributor to the De Stijl art movement and his works are characterised by a grid of vertical and horizontal lines and the use of primary colours. Mondrian was influenced by theosophy, cubism, and neoplasticism, and his work was a major influence on the development of abstract art. He was also a member of the Dutch art group, The Hague School. Piet Mondrian's personal life was marked by a search for spiritual harmony and order, and he was a committed practitioner of theosophy.
