About this artwork

This piece is a perfect illustration of Piet Mondrian's remarkably restrained visual vocabulary. It's made up of only black horizontal and vertical lines, supplemented with swathes of white and the three basic colours, the building blocks of all other hues through blending. The arrangement of these elements into a cohesive whole, as well as the use of pure colour, were intended to convey a moral perspective on society. Each distinct element, along with the collective arrangement it forms, symbolises the relationship between the individual and the group, or the universal.

About the artist

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch painter and theoretician who is best known for his pioneering work in abstract art. He was a major contributor to the De Stijl art movement and his works are characterised by a grid of vertical and horizontal lines and the use of primary colours. Mondrian was influenced by theosophy, cubism, and neoplasticism, and his work was a major influence on the development of abstract art. He was also a member of the Dutch art group, The Hague School. Piet Mondrian's personal life was marked by a search for spiritual harmony and order, and he was a committed practitioner of theosophy.
