About this artwork

Piet Mondrian may be well known for his abstract art, but his original inspiration was derived from the flat landscapes of the Netherlands, his childhood home. His creation 'Composition Trees II' was initially a traditional sketch, drawn in 1908. However, after moving to Paris in 1911 and immersing himself in the world of Cubism, Mondrian transformed the piece into an abstract work.

About the artist

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch painter and theoretician who is best known for his pioneering work in abstract art. He was a major contributor to the De Stijl art movement and his works are characterised by a grid of vertical and horizontal lines and the use of primary colours. Mondrian was influenced by theosophy, cubism, and neoplasticism, and his work was a major influence on the development of abstract art. He was also a member of the Dutch art group, The Hague School. Piet Mondrian's personal life was marked by a search for spiritual harmony and order, and he was a committed practitioner of theosophy.
