About this artwork

Piet Mondrian, while famous for his abstract art, had a fundamental vision deeply embedded in the flat landscapes of the Netherlands where he spent his childhood. His work 'Trees on the Gein: Moonrise' was inspired by a collection of sketches he developed growing up in Zeeland. His brushwork and the application of non-naturalistic colours on the canvas are significant as they represent Mondrian’s trials with luminism. Luminism is a late impressionist style in painting that focuses heavily on the manipulation of light effects.

About the artist

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch painter and theoretician who is best known for his pioneering work in abstract art. He was a major contributor to the De Stijl art movement and his works are characterised by a grid of vertical and horizontal lines and the use of primary colours. Mondrian was influenced by theosophy, cubism, and neoplasticism, and his work was a major influence on the development of abstract art. He was also a member of the Dutch art group, The Hague School. Piet Mondrian's personal life was marked by a search for spiritual harmony and order, and he was a committed practitioner of theosophy.
