About this artwork

Pieter Brueghel The Younger, son of Pieter Bruegel The Elder, followed in his father's artistic footsteps. His dad was a big deal in the Dutch Renaissance art scene and a trailblazer in genre painting. Pieter Junior was pretty good at recreating his father's masterpieces, which helped spread his work worldwide. One such piece is an oil on panel painting known as 'The Battle between Carnival and Lent'. This piece uses a clever contrast to depict the two faces of life at that time - a tavern on one side representing good times, and a church on the other symbolizing religious devotion.
