About this artwork

Raoul Dufy, a French artist, was known for his connection to Fauvism. This artistic movement was founded by early 20th century modern artists who prioritised strong colours and a painterly style over accurate representations. One of his works in 1929, 'The Bay of Angels', showcases the bay along the Mediterranean seaside town of Nice, France. Dufy used his signature bold colour palette and expressive brushwork in this painting. His unique perspective, however, sets this work apart. The artist took inspiration from the views he had from his studio window. This allowed him to paint the scenic promenade from an elevated perspective, creating an expansive view across the ocean.

About the artist

Raoul Dufy (3 June 1877 - 23 March 1953) was a French Fauvist painter and printmaker. He was known for his colourful and decorative scenes of landscapes, leisure activities, and the French Riviera. He was influenced by the work of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Signac, and his work was often characterised by a spontaneous approach and a bold use of colour. Dufy was also a prolific designer of textiles, ceramics, and theater sets. He was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Legion of Honor.
