About the artist
Across his four-decade long career, Diebenkorn experienced three distinct artistic phases. The 1950s saw him exploring Abstraction, a style that was gaining traction on the East Coast. However, in the mid-1950s, he made an unexpected switch to figuration, which continued until the mid-1960s. Diebenkorn embraced Abstraction once again in the late 1960s, laying the groundwork for his acclaimed Ocean Park series.
His abstract, geometric masterpieces played a crucial role in gaining him international acclaim. The Boston Globe lauded these works as "some of the most beautiful pieces of art created in America, or indeed the world, post-World War II." well known for his enchanting colour palettes and finely-tuned compositions, Diebenkorn drew significant inspiration from the lighting and atmosphere of his workspaces, which greatly influenced his art.
