About this artwork

"Ball of Twine" is a classic representation of the single object still-life works created by American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein in the early 1960s. Lichtenstein had a talent for bringing ordinary objects, like a ball of twine, to life through his painting. His use of dark linework doesn't give a sense of shadow, erasing all semblance of volume and instead, draws the viewer's attention to the beautifully detailed weaving pattern of the twine.

About the artist

Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an American pop artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His work was heavily influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style. He used a variety of techniques to achieve his signature look, including the use of Ben-Day dots and the application of bold primary colours. Lichtenstein was married twice and had two sons. He was also a professor at several universities and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1997.
