About this artwork

Roy Lichtenstein, a well known American pop artist, created the piece 'Kiss V' in 1964. This artwork portrays a visibly upset woman with bright yellow hair and bold lips, locked in an embrace with a man while tears stream down her face. The contrast of the white tears against the vibrant colours of the rest of the painting immediately draws the observer to her emotional state. Lichtenstein made several paintings featuring the same couple in an embrace, using a unique printing process known as Ben Day dots. This method involves applying small coloured dots in various densities and overlaps onto a canvas. The printing is done using the CMYK colour model, which uses just four colours of ink: cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black).

About the artist

Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an American pop artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His work was heavily influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style. He used a variety of techniques to achieve his signature look, including the use of Ben-Day dots and the application of bold primary colours. Lichtenstein was married twice and had two sons. He was also a professor at several universities and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1997.
