About this artwork

Salvador Dali, a well-known Surrealist artist, created the 'Apparition of a Face and Fruit-Dish' in 1938, right in the heart of the Spanish Civil War. The painting's focal point is a bowl bursting with juicy, ripe pears that also takes on the appearance of Dali’s late friend and poet, Federico Garcia Lorca's face. Lorca was tragically killed by Fascists just after the war started. If you take a closer look at the painting, you'll notice a dog's figure stretching from one side to the other, with its collar cleverly created from an aqueduct woven into the backdrop. These dual images were a common feature in Dali’s panoramic critical period. This was an innovative style of surrealism that Dali pioneered, which involved crafting optical illusions to unleash the creative power of the unconscious mind.

About the artist

Salvador Dali , born on 11 May 1904 and died on 23 January 1989, was a Spanish surrealist artist who was well known for his technical skill and precise draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the works of Sigmund Freud and was a leader of the Surrealist movement. He was also known for his flamboyant and eccentric public persona. Dali was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. He also had an affinity for the Old Masters, particularly Raphael and Velazquez. He was also a skilled filmmaker and writer.
