About this artwork

Salvador Dali, the well known Spanish Surrealist artist, drew inspiration from the Greek myth of Narcissus in his painting 'Metamorphosis of Narcissus'. Narcissus, a beautiful son of a river god, was loved by all, but he was self-obsessed. His vanity led the gods to punish him by making him fall for his own reflection in a pool. Unable to embrace his own reflection, Narcissus faded away, and a narcissus, or daffodil, sprouted in his place. Dali's painting portrays Narcissus kneeling by the pool, next to a statue of a hand cradling a hatching egg from which a narcissus flower grows, reminiscent of his form. The use of double images in this painting was a characteristic of Dali's critical paranoiac period, a unique approach to surrealism where he experimented with optical illusions to unlock the creative power of the subconscious mind.

About the artist

Salvador Dali , born on 11 May 1904 and died on 23 January 1989, was a Spanish surrealist artist who was well known for his technical skill and precise draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the works of Sigmund Freud and was a leader of the Surrealist movement. He was also known for his flamboyant and eccentric public persona. Dali was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. He also had an affinity for the Old Masters, particularly Raphael and Velazquez. He was also a skilled filmmaker and writer.
