About this artwork

"Swans Reflecting Elephants" is a piece of art created by the well known Spanish Surrealist painter, Salvador Dali, back in 1937. The artwork showcases a lake surrounded by a rocky terrain, reflecting the dry, rugged landscapes of Catalonia in Spain - the place where Dali spent his childhood. Three swans can be seen poised in front of desolate trees. The elongated necks of the swans along with the convoluted trunks of the trees create a reflection in the water that resembles three elephants. This dual imagery was a part of Dali's extensive critical period, a unique surrealism style he developed which involved the creation of optical illusions to unlock the artistic potential of the subconscious mind.

About the artist

Salvador Dali , born on 11 May 1904 and died on 23 January 1989, was a Spanish surrealist artist who was well known for his technical skill and precise draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the works of Sigmund Freud and was a leader of the Surrealist movement. He was also known for his flamboyant and eccentric public persona. Dali was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. He also had an affinity for the Old Masters, particularly Raphael and Velazquez. He was also a skilled filmmaker and writer.
