About this artwork

Salvador Dali's 'The Apotheosis of Homer' is a surreal oil painting that presents a unique portrayal of Homer, the well known ancient Greek poet. Homer was known for his epic poems and was often glorified through various hero cults in classical times. However, in this art piece, Dali takes a different approach, subtly placing Homer as a shattered statue in the bottom left corner.

About the artist

Salvador Dali , born on 11 May 1904 and died on 23 January 1989, was a Spanish surrealist artist who was well known for his technical skill and precise draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the works of Sigmund Freud and was a leader of the Surrealist movement. He was also known for his flamboyant and eccentric public persona. Dali was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. He also had an affinity for the Old Masters, particularly Raphael and Velazquez. He was also a skilled filmmaker and writer.
