About this artwork

Back in 1930, Sir Cedric Morris created this self-portrait using oil paint on canvas. Morris had a unique post-impressionist style that he developed after studying extensively overseas. His work includes portraits, landscapes, and incredibly ornate still life paintings of birds and flowers. This particular print is carefully color-matched to the original and got a thumbs-up from the National Portrait Gallery. Every time you buy, you're supporting the museum's work.

About the artist

Born in 1889 in Sketty, South Wales, the distinguished artist and botanist Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris spent much of his early life traveling across North Africa and Europe, setting up studios in unique locations such as Paris, London, and Cornwall. In the 1930s, Morris and his artistic partner, Arthur Lett-Haines, made their home at The Pound, Higham's Pound Farm in South Suffolk.

They were the driving forces behind the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing (1937-78), which functioned more as a creative haven for artists than a traditional educational institution. It championed plein air painting and individual expression, fostering the talents of acclaimed artists such as Lucian Freud and Maggi Hambling.

Known for his portraits, landscapes, and studies of flowers and animals, Morris' signature bold impasto colour style was particularly apparent in his iris paintings. Beyond his artistic pursuits, his passion for botany often led him on trips to Portugal and Turkey to seek out novel plant species for cultivation at Benton End.
