About this artwork

William Orpen was an artist from Ireland who spent most of his time creating art in London in the early 1900s. He was well-known for his portrait paintings. In 1912, he created 'Girl in a Blue Hat', which was one of a series of portraits of Vera Brewster, who was the wife of writer Joe Horne. This particular artwork is a classic example of a 'swagger portrait' - a term used to describe paintings that use visual metaphors to imply nobility or dignity.
