About this artwork

During the summer of 1912, Spencer Gore took a trip to the freshly established town of Letchworth. Here, he created some of his most cutting-edge landscape paintings, employing abstract shapes and vibrant colours. 'The Cinder Path' depicts a spot on the outskirts of Letchworth. Gore's unique point of view means that the path, constructed of industrial debris, diminishes vertically into the mid-distance, with fields and hedges structured around it. This was one of the rare British artworks displayed in the Second Post-Impressionist exhibition.
