About this artwork

Tamara de Lempicka was a well known Polish artist famed for her Art Deco portraits and stylised nudes, blending sophisticated cubism with a neoclassical twist. During her time in Paris, she was tasked with creating a cover for 'Die Dame', a German fashion magazine, to commemorate women's independence. In this assignment, De Lempicka created a self-portrait where she is depicted in a green Bugatti, donning a leather helmet and gloves. This piece of art has since become one of the most recognised examples of Art Deco painting.
