About this artwork

The guy we're talking about here, Theo van Doesburg, was a really talented Dutch artist who started the De Stijl art movement. This movement was all about abstract forms, minimalistic designs, and bold primary colours. He even published a book in 1925, called 'Basic Concepts of the New Creative Art'. The print we see here was actually the cover of that book. And guess what? He launched it under the famous German art school, Bauhaus! Pretty cool, right?

About the artist

Theo van Doesburg, born as Christian Emil Marie Küpper (1883-1931), was an important Dutch artist. His earliest work closely followed the Amsterdam Impressionists and mirrored Vincent van Gogh's style and subjects. However, in 1913, upon reading Wassily Kandinsky's Rückblicke, a retrospective on Kandinsky's life from 1903 to 1913, van Doesburg had an epiphany. He realised that painting could transcend everyday life and embody a higher spiritual level, and that abstraction was the only fitting representation.

While serving in the army in 1915, he encountered Piet Mondrian's work, which embodied his ideal in painting, an absolute abstraction of reality. Alongside Mondrian and fellow artists like Bart van der Leck, Antony Kok, Vilmos Huszár, and Jacobus Oud, he established the group and magazine De Stijl in 1917. The group, akin to the Bauhaus, was devoted to the synthesis of fine and applied arts through pure geometry and abstraction. Van Doesburg embraced minimalism, favoring primary colours and stark black and white. In 1929 he was pivotal in the formation of the Abstraction-Création group in Paris. His died 1931 in Davos, Switzerland.
