About this artwork

Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a Swiss guy who made it big in France as an Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. Le Chat Noir holds the title of being the first modern cabaret and it was right in the heart of the Montmartre district in Paris, famous for its bohemian vibe. In 1896, Steinlen came out with this poster to promote a tour across different cities featuring the cabaret entertainers from Le Chat Noir.

About the artist

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (November 10, 1859 – December 13, 1923) was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. He was best known for his posters of cabarets and cafes, as well as his illustrations for books and magazines. Steinlen was influenced by the realism of Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet, as well as the symbolism of Odilon Redon and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. He was also a friend of the poet and playwright Tristan Bernard and the painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Steinlen's works often depicted the harshness of life in the working-class districts of Paris.
