About this artwork

Mrs. Siddons, who lived from 1755 to 1831, was a highly acclaimed actress of her era, leading her field for three decades. This portrait was created by Gainsborough in the cold months of 1784-5, during her third season in London where she was performing her most iconic role - Lady Macbeth. Instead of being portrayed in character as she often was in previous portraits, here Mrs. Siddons is shown in stylish attire of the time, off stage. This print has been colour-matched to the original painting and received the stamp of approval from the National Gallery. Every purchase contributes to the ongoing efforts of the museum.

About the artist

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was an English painter and printmaker. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy and is best known for his portraits and landscapes. He was a master of the Rococo style, which was popular in England during the 18th century. His works were influenced by the Dutch masters, particularly Rembrandt and Rubens. He was also known for his sensitive and sympathetic portrayal of his sitters. Gainsborough was a successful artist in his lifetime and was highly regarded by his contemporaries.
