About this artwork

This piece of art showcases the daughters of Thomas Gainsborough and it's believed to have been created a year or so after they relocated to Bath in 1759. You can see Margret resting her head on her sister's cheek, while they cradle a cat that's only just been outlined. Despite the faces being fully painted, the rest of the artwork is incomplete. However, the light brushwork around the girls gives the impression of storm clouds and trees. This print is carefully colour-coordinated with the original piece and has received the National Gallery's approval. Each purchase contributes to the museum's work.

About the artist

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was an English painter and printmaker. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy and is best known for his portraits and landscapes. He was a master of the Rococo style, which was popular in England during the 18th century. His works were influenced by the Dutch masters, particularly Rembrandt and Rubens. He was also known for his sensitive and sympathetic portrayal of his sitters. Gainsborough was a successful artist in his lifetime and was highly regarded by his contemporaries.
