The well known Renaissance painting 'Bacchus and Ariadne' by Titian has left a significant impact on the art scene in Europe and remains one of the National Gallery's most celebrated pieces. The painting brings to life the narrative penned by famed classical writers Ovid and Catallus, revolving around the Cretan princess Ariadne who was left stranded on the Greek island of Naxos. The moment Bacchus, the god of wine, instantly falls in love with her and darts from his chariot towards her is beautifully portrayed. The Duke of Ferrara commissioned Titian to create 'Bacchus and Ariadne', specifically for the 'Alabaster Room' in the Ducal Palace. Artists Giovanni Bellini and Dosso Dossi were also asked to create pieces, all centered around the theme of hedonistic bacchanals.
