About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh was a well known Dutch Post-Impressionist artist known for his wide variety of artistic creations, from landscapes to self-portraits, signified by their vibrant hues and potent brushwork. In 1888, Van Gogh took up residence in Arles, a city located in southern France. During this time, he journeyed to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. While in the town, Van Gogh created several paintings, among which was 'Boats Saintes-Maries'. Van Gogh's depiction of the boats featured vivid colours and pronounced outlines, which strikingly contrasted his naturalistic representation of the sandy shores and ocean.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
