About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist, is known for his diverse artworks. He painted everything from landscapes to self-portraits, all marked by vibrant colours and dynamic brushwork. In 1887, he created 'Fishing in Spring. Pont de Clichy', a piece that reflected his bond with fellow Impressionist painter Paul Signac. Inspired by Signac, Van Gogh's colour palette became brighter and his brushwork more varied. This particular artwork depicts the Seine River at the Pont de Clichy, near Asnières. This location was a common painting spot for Van Gogh and Signac, where they would often paint together.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
