About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist, was well-known for his diverse collection of artwork, which included everything from scenic landscapes to intense self-portraits. His style was marked by powerful hues and emotive strokes of the brush. In 1888, while residing in Arles, in the south of France, Van Gogh created 'Wheat Fields with Sheaves'. This artwork is characterised by horizontal bands of composition that direct your gaze from the sheaves in the front, to the wheat rows in the center, and further to the trees and homes lining the horizon, before finally settling on the blue sky overhead.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
