About this artwork

Wassily Kandinsky created the artwork 'Black Lines' in 1913. The piece is characterised by a maze of slender, black lines interacting with lively floating shapes. At this time, Kandinsky was primarily focused on crafting large, brilliant paintings filled with line work. He kept some bits and pieces of identifiable imagery during this timeframe. An example of this is the semblance of a mushroom we can spot on the left-hand side. This was all part of his strategy to gain recognition and respect as an artist before he ventured into more abstract territories.
