About this artwork

In the finale of 'A Midsummer's Night Dream', the fairy king Oberon and queen Titania patch things up. Moth, Peaseblossom, Cobweb, and Mustardseed celebrate by dancing in a circle, with Puck providing the rhythm. William Blake depicts his fairies lightly tip-toeing, adorned in petals, leaves, and tiny dresses. They bear a human resemblance, yet their size in comparison to a tree trunk is minute. The odd, gleaming light from the fireflies morphs them into enchanting creatures. Blake's interpretation of fairies, their characteristics, and their dance rituals, have significantly shaped our perception of these mythical entities today.

About the artist

William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. He was a major figure of the Romantic Age and is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of poetry and visual arts. His works are characterised by their symbolism, use of imagery, and exploration of spirituality. His personal life was marked by tragedy, including the death of his beloved brother Robert in 1787. Blake was also a strong advocate of the abolition of slavery and a supporter of the French Revolution.
