About this artwork

William Blake was a poet, artist, and printmaker from England. Though he didn't gain much recognition while he was alive, he's now seen as a key figure in the romantic age of poetry and visual arts. One of Blake's designs, 'The Ancient of Days', appeared as the introductory image in the 1794 prophetic book 'Europe a Prophecy'. The design depicts Blake's take on Urisen, a character from mythology who personifies traditional rationality and law.

About the artist

William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. He was a major figure of the Romantic Age and is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of poetry and visual arts. His works are characterised by their symbolism, use of imagery, and exploration of spirituality. His personal life was marked by tragedy, including the death of his beloved brother Robert in 1787. Blake was also a strong advocate of the abolition of slavery and a supporter of the French Revolution.
