About this artwork

Andy Warhol's iconic Campbell's Soup Cans are some of the most famous and acclaimed pieces in the art world. Warhol first started painting the Campbell's Soup Can series in about 1961, and the theme continued to evolve over the years. The Ferus series of these paintings, named after the thirty-two individual can paintings displayed at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, are the most extensive and recognised among the Campbell's Soup Can works by Warhol. For these pieces, Warhol reproduced the iconic red and white soup cans, going through a product list provided by Campbell's Soup Company and ticking off each soup variety as he completed it. A subsequent series of Campbell's Soup cans, created around 1965, includes nineteen differently colored cans. In this series, Warhol didn't just use unconventional ink colors, but also used spray paint for the backgrounds and the lower (white) part of the label, using a range of different colors. The outcome was a set that was both novel and recognizable. Warhol, through these revolutionary works, questioned and challenged traditional perceptions of art.
