About this artwork

In the wake of President John F. Kennedy's tragic death in November 1963, Warhol introduced an impressive collection of silk screen artworks known as Jackie in 1964. This collection highlighted Warhol's lifelong fascination with using portraiture as a form of biography. The pieces in the Jackie series, aptly named The Week That Was and Jackie Frieze, showcase the range of emotional expressions on Jackie Kennedy's face on the tragic day her husband was assassinated. Warhol effectively captured the strong images of the First Lady's shock and grief during her husband's funeral in Washington D.C. later the same week. Later in 1964, Warhol unveiled three more Jackie portrait silk screens, dubbed Red Jackie and Blue Jackie. These pieces are often referred to as the "Hyannisport" Jackies, as the source photo of Jackie from 1960 was captured at the Kennedy family's holiday retreat in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Through these artworks, Warhol paints a vivid picture of the legend of Jackie, with emphasis on her beauty, style, and affluence.
