About this artwork

The London Zoo has consistently attracted crowds, using its diverse and foreign creatures to boost Underground usage. The inaugural poster featuring the zoo on the London Underground emerged in 1913, showcasing a vibrant scene of parrots and cockatoos. This was followed by a series of others, spotlighting creatures like Komodo dragons and kangaroos. Notably, the artist Charles Paine used his signature bold designs to draw in passengers by showcasing a group of huddled penguins against a vivid yellow backdrop. This piece of art was ordered in 1921 by the Underground Electric Railways Company of London. This reproduction stays true to the original print from the historic poster collection at the London Transport Museum. Every purchase made contributes to the ongoing activities of the museum.
