About this artwork

Edvard Munch, a Norwegian artist, is most famous for his semi-abstract and enigmatic themes, along with his dramatic use of colour. He created 'The Scream' in 1893, a painting that portrays a distressed face against a sunset backdrop, using a mix of oil, tempera, and pastel. Munch shared that his inspiration for this piece came from a walk where he felt an 'endless scream passing through nature' upon witnessing the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky a fiery red.
