About the artist
Born in Braintree, Essex, a British artist, also an illustrator and designer, specialised in watercolour, posters, wallpaper, tapestries, and theater decor. Bawden attended Cambridge School of Art from 1919 to 1922, followed by the Royal College of Art from 1922 to 1925. His mentors included Paul Nash, and he formed a close friendship with Eric Ravilious. During World War II, he served as an Official War Artist, creating murals and paintings in France and the Middle East. Bawden's well known work consists of book illustrations, predominantly using pen and ink with a precise and efficient style, along with linocut, lithography, and stencil techniques.
