About this artwork

Henri Matisse created the artwork 'Still Life with Oranges' in 1899, during a period of early exploration in his career. The painting features a pretty simple color palette and quick brush strokes that are clearly visible. The vibrant image showcases a bowl filled with oranges, a coffee cup's outline, and a green pitcher placed on a blue table top. You can even see a bit of the bare canvas peeking through the painting in the left corner, suggesting that the piece might be unfinished. The way Matisse handles the brush and the way he uses color in this painting give us a hint of the abstract imagery he'll experiment with later in his career.
