About the artist

The British textile and stained-glass designer, John Henry Dearle, was born on August 22, 1859, and died on January 15, 1932. He was trained by the influential artist, William Morris, who was a notable figure of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Initially starting as a shop assistant and then a design apprentice, Dearle ascended to the position of Morris & Co.'s chief designer by 1890. He contributed to the creation of wallpapers, woven and printed textiles, stained glass, and carpets, along with the background and foliage patterns for tapestries featuring figures by Edward Burne-Jones and others.

Post Morris’s demise in 1896, Dearle took over as the Art Director of the firm, and with Burne-Jones's death in 1898, he became the principal stained glass designer. Despite his significant contributions, Dearle's work was often overshadowed by Morris's reputation, with his designs even being sold under Morris's name. However, the latter part of the 20th century saw a shift in the critical assessment of Dearle's work, acknowledging his unique artistic vision. Although he always stayed true to Morris's aesthetic, Dearle began integrating distinctive Persian and Turkish influences into his designs from the 1890s onwards.
