About this artwork

Jasper Johns is a well known American artist, recognised for his talent in painting, sculpting, and printmaking, with his pieces predominantly linked to abstract expressionism and pop art. In 1959, he created 'False Start,' an oil on canvas masterpiece that blends color patches with the words red, orange, blue, and yellow stenciled on the canvas's surface. He utilised a unique gestural technique, applying paint in small sections through spontaneous arm movements, instead of a planned layout.
