About this artwork

Back in 1917, the British War Memorial Committee tasked John Nash with creating a painting for their grand memorial gallery. Nash's response was 'Oppy Wood,' a depiction of two soldiers scanning the barren No Man’s Land for any signs of the enemy. He painted the wood as nothing more than a jumble of tree stumps, with the terrain a cluttered mess of flooded shell holes - a stark contrast to the untouched blue sky above. This print is color-matched to Nash's original work and has been given the seal of approval by the Imperial War Museum. Every purchase of this print contributes to the ongoing work of the museum.

About the artist

John Nash (1893-1977) initially made his mark as a local newspaper journalist before his artistic talents emerged. He started dabbling in oil painting in 1914 and later served with the Artists' Rifles in World War I, becoming the Official War Artist by 1918. Post-war, he relocated to Gerrards Cross, living there until 1921. Nash was part of the Observer Corps in World War II, and by 1940, he was named Official War Artist to the Admiralty. In 1944, after his demobilization, he settled in Colchester, Essex.
