About this artwork

Marc Chagall was a creative genius from Russia and France, famous for his contribution to numerous prominent modern art forms. He showed his versatility by producing art pieces across a wide spectrum. One of his creations in 1911, an oil on canvas painting titled 'I and the Village', is a blend of multiple surreal images that seem to seamlessly overlap. The art piece beautifully captures aspects of Eastern European folktales, depicted in a cubist style. As suggested by its name, the painting draws inspiration from Chagall’s memories of his birthplace, Liozna in Belarus.
