About this artwork

After conducting his experiments with cubism, Piet Mondrian came up with his unique style around 1920, which he called 'Neoplasticism'. The idea behind this artform was to achieve a setup based on contrasts. This meant that artworks often incorporated both vertical and horizontal lines, and neutral hues along with primary colors. Prior to creating 'Composition No.2', Mondrian had been experimenting with checkerboard patterns. This infused a broader range of rectangle dimensions into this artwork, and also brought in multiple shades of grey.
