About the artist

Scottish artist Samuel John Peploe (1871–1935), was the eldest member of the group known as the Scottish Colourists. Most of his life was spent in Edinburgh, though he often journeyed to France and even resided in Paris from 1910 to 1913. During his Parisian period, Peploe transitioned from an Impressionistic style to one moulded by Cézanne and the Fauves. However, his artwork eventually evolved to a less modernistic approach. In the 1920s, he was particularly fond of visiting the island of Iona, which, along with still life, became his preferred themes. A significant collection of Peploe's work is housed at the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery.
