About the artist

Born in Mesa, Arizona in 1920, Wayne Thiebaud quickly moved to Los Angeles with his family a year later, later gaining recognition as a bay area artist. He discovered a passion for stage design and lighting in high school and juggled part-time work at a movie theater with a summer apprenticeship at Walt Disney Studios. His commercial experiences, including his stint as an Air Force artist and cartoonist from 1942 to 1945, undeniably influenced his later work in the Pop Art movement.

Thiebaud kickstarted his painting career in the 1950s, melding gestural brushwork, commonplace subjects, and commercial imagery. He's famed for his depictions of cakes, pies, and candies in a classic diner style, emphasizing their aesthetic as much as their taste. He brought this to life by using synthetic colours, painting with a knife, and repeating objects like a production line, thereby modernizing the traditional still-life genre for an era of mass production and consumption.

From 1959, Thiebaud devoted his life to teaching, first at Sacramento City College, and later at the University of California in Davis.
